He Gave His Word

Description

This book is based on the firm conviction that when God makes a promise, he keeps it. When he gives his word, you can rely on it. The promises that are most relevant to Christians are found in the New Testament, the lens through which the Old Testament is to be understood. The purpose of the book is to show how we can recognise God’s promises and how we should respond to them.

Warning of the dangers of assuming that every verse in the Bible is a promise and that we can claim any one of them, Dr Petts stresses that God’s promises are ultimately fulfilled in Christ and the salvation he came to bring us. He concentrates on those aspects of salvation that are specifically referred to as promises – justification, eternal life, sonship, etc. – and devotes a chapter to each.

The final three chapters discuss how to identify other promises, how to understand them correctly, and how to respond to them. New Testament writers nowhere tell us to claim God’s promises. Rather, we should believe them, because we have them, act accordingly, and, where necessary, wait patiently for God to fulfil them, rejoicing in God’s faithfulness.

A MUST for all who want to understand what God’s word really says about his wonderful promises.
